Basics of Enterprise Storage Course
Develop a rigorous, enterprise-ready foundation in data storage. The course begins with data representation, then progresses through core components and architectures. You will build practical capability across NAS (file), SAN (block), and object storage—how they operate, where each is most effective, and the trade-offs involved. The syllabus includes RAID, snapshots, replication, and backup strategies, and concludes with a clear, working grasp of performance metrics (IOPS, throughput, latency, response time, and queue depth).
Learning Outcomes
- Explain how binary data works and distinguish between structured and unstructured data.
- Identify storage system components (drives, controllers, cache) and cluster-level redundancy concepts.
- Compare direct-attached and network-attached storage connections, and array types (all-flash / hybrid).
- Configure and operate NAS shares/exports over SMB and NFS for multi-user access.
- Describe SAN fundamentals and protocols (Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NVMe-oF) and select appropriately by use case.
- Understand object storage, S3 operations (PUT/GET/LIST/DELETE), and basic permission models.
- Choose between file, block, and object storage based on workload patterns and constraints.
- Plan data protection with RAID levels (0/1/5/6/10/50/60), snapshots, replication, and backups; define RPO/RTO.
- Read performance figures and estimate IOPS/throughput/latency to validate capacity and design choices.
Prerequisites
- Basic IT literacy (operating systems; IP networking concepts).
- Access to a computer for following practical activities.
- No prior enterprise storage experience required.
